The Institutional Overview needs to present the critical factors that will influence how people will read and interpret the rest of the Systems Portfolio. If, for example, you intend to move strongly into distance delivery (either because you believe it makes sense or because you want to keep up with your competition), this intention needs to be prominent in the Overview. Then people (including AQIP's Appraisers) will be able to keep in mind your overall direction, and will read the rest of the Portfolio with this intention of yours in mind.;)

At Lansing Community College, our updated strategic plan will form the basis of our Institutional Overview. Originally approved in 2000, our Board of Trustees updated the plan in May 2003 to issue additional or revised challenges to College leadership. The plan has and will inform College budgeting , subsequent planning, and major initiatives. Institutionalizing LCC participation in AQIP is a central feature of the strategic plan

Our strategic plan summary is available at http://www.lcc.edu/planning/strategic_plan/index.html.

As a new appraiser for AQIP, I thought I would look at the Institutional Overview discussion. Spangehl's comment that the Overview should affect the way appraisers read and interpret the rest of the systems portfolio and that intended directions should be clear caused me to go back and add an intended direction clearly stated by the institution for which I am writing Critical Characteristics. I found this helpful advice for appraising the Overview.

If you want the appraisers to recognize what makes your institution distinctive, you need to tell them in the Overview: what resources, goals, internal dynamics, external forces, etc. distinguish your organization from the thousands of others.
Capturing this in five pages is no easy job.
